Volunteer Drivers Needed at Mama’s Kitchen

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - March 16, 2004 - Mama’s Kitchen, a volunteer driven, not-for-profit organization that provides meal delivery service to men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS in San Diego County , announced today that they have a variety of volunteer opportunities available.

“For more than a decade, Mama’s Kitchen has been providing nutritious meals 365 days a year to nearly 400 San Diegans affected by AIDS,” said Alberto Cortes executive director for Mama’s Kitchen. “Our organization relies on our dedicated volunteers to continue our mission: that every person is entitled to the basic necessity of life - nutritious food.”

Mama’s Kitchen is looking for drivers to deliver meals to the homes of our clients throughout San Diego County. The volunteer opportunities for drivers as follows:

  • Drivers (Weekdays) – to deliver meals to clients between 4 and 6pm five days a week. Most drivers deliver the same route on the same day each week. Permanent routes are available every day.
  • Float Drivers – to deliver meals to clients between 4 and 6pm five days a week. These drivers fill in for Drivers who are absent and generally call in when they are available to deliver meals. Great for volunteers with variable schedules.
  • Couriers – to deliver multiple meals (routes) to our satellite drop-off locations for other drivers to pick up and deliver. North County and East County couriers pick up meals between 1:30 and 2:30pm.

Mama’s Kitchen also has opportunities available for local companies. Companies can “adopt-a-route” and have employees give one day a week to deliver meals (driving duties can rotate among employees).

“The volunteers at Mama’s Kitchen are tremendously important to Mama’s Kitchen, to our clients, and to the community at-large,” said Bill Patten , manager of volunteer services for Mama’s Kitchen. “Our volunteers really make a difference and they have the opportunity to experience the joy and satisfaction of providing a valuable service in their own community.”

Today, Mama's Kitchen prepares and delivers three meals a day for every day of the week to about 300 men, women, and children affected by AIDS or other critical illnesses in San Diego County. Mama’s Kitchen is located at 1875 Second Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. For more information, visit http://www.mamaskitchen.org.
