SAN DIEGO – Volunteers are the secret ingredient to the success of this year’s Mama’s Pie In The Sky bake sale to benefit Mama's Kitchen, San Diego’s only free, countywide home-delivered meals program for individuals and families affected by HIV/AIDS and other critical illnesses. The pie sale is now in it’s second year, and Mama’s Kitchen needs community volunteers and local businesses to sell delectable holiday pies – pumpkin, pecan and apple – to help Mama’s Kitchen make up for some of the loss in government funding they’ve experienced this year. The pies are generously donated by San Diego’s top bakers, caterers and chefs and are sure to warm the hearts and tables of thousands throughout San Diego County neighborhoods this Thanksgiving.
Every pie sold pays for almost half of each client’s weekly meals – meals they might not have had without Mama’s Kitchen and the support of the community. In 2006, Mama's Kitchen hopes to raise $100,000 to directly fund thousands of free, hot nutritious meals and help ensure that no one living with HIV/AIDS or other critical illnesses in the community will go hungry. Mama's Kitchen has never turned away anyone in need of help and the net proceeds of this year’s Mama’s Pie in the Sky program will enable her to keep her promise.
There are three ways to actively participate in this year’s Mama’s Pie In The Sky bake sale: volunteering as an individual pie seller, forming sales teams and hosting a pick-up site at your business. All sales volunteers will receive training and promotional materials to help them sell the pies to their friends, neighbors and co-workers. Sales teams can be an office group, a school group, a community group or simply a group of friends who want to make a difference. Pie buyers can choose any of one of our 20 sites around San Diego County to pick-up their pie. Pie sales officially begin Wed., October 18, 2006.
Mama’s Kitchen also affords an opportunity to local businesses to become a designated pick-up site in their community. As a pick-up site, businesses will be publicized in all Mama’s Pie In The Sky promotional materials, which will increase foot traffic to your business or office on “Pie Pick-up Day” which is Wed., November 22. Pick-up sites are not required to sell the pies.
September 15, 2006 is the deadline to register as an individual sales volunteer, a sales team or as a pie pick-up site. For more information, visit http://www.mamaskitchen.org or contact Edith Glassey or Jennifer Brown, at Mama’s Kitchen, 619-233-6262.
About Mama's Kitchen
Mama's Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund, a food bank for people with AIDS, discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious food. Today, Mama's Kitchen prepares and delivers three meals a day for every day of the week to about 300 men, women, and children affected by AIDS or other critical illnesses in San Diego County. Mama’s Kitchen is located at 1875 Second Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101. For more information, visit http://www.mamaskitchen.org.
