Mayor Jerry Sanders to deliver Mama’s Kitchen’s 5 Millionth Meal

SAN DIEGO - Mama’s Kitchen, a volunteer-driven, not-for-profit organization that provides meals 365 days a year to San Diegans affected by critical illnesses, has announced that San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders will deliver their five millionth meal on July 15th.

“We’re honored that Mayor Sanders will be able to join us to celebrate this incredible milestone for our organization and our community,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director for Mama’s Kitchen. “Mayor Sanders has been very supportive of Mama’s Kitchen and this support has helped to make this milestone possible.”

Mama’s Kitchen is a community-based solution to hunger for people affected by critical illnesses such as AIDS and cancer. In its almost 20 year history, Mama’s Kitchen has never turned anyone away who was eligible for their services nor maintained a waiting list.

“This is an incredible achievement for an organization that has provided hope and nutrition for the thousands of people in San Diego,” said Mayor Sanders. “Mama’s Kitchen has made a real difference in our community, and the need for their services continues to grow.”

The organization has been challenged with the rising cost of food, over 25% since 2006, and the increasing numbers of San Diegans contacting the organization seeking sufficient nutrition to manage or improve their illness. Cortés says that donations of funds, canned food and volunteer time are especially needed by the organization during the summer from throughout San Diego County. Persons interested in helping are encouraged to contact the organization at 619-233-6262.

About Mama’s Kitchen Mama’s Kitchen was founded in 1990 when volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund, a food bank for people with AIDS, discovered that many of their clients were becoming too ill to take care of themselves. They realized that a reliable home meal delivery service was needed to ensure that these individuals would continue to receive nutritious food. In 2006, the organization expanded its service to any San Diegan affected by a critical illness such as cancer or heart disease. Today, Mama’s Kitchen provides three meals a day each day of the year to over 370 men, women, and children in San Diego County. For more information, visit www.mamaskitchen.org.
