Our Mission

At Mama's Kitchen we believe that every person is entitled to the basic necessity of life, nutritious food. As a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization, we prepare and deliver food to men, women and children who are affected by AIDS or cancer.

Community Support

Bog Bagnall

Donor Profile: Tom Bell

Having lived in San Diego since 1997, Tom learned of the work that Mama's Kitchen did in the community through various events and programs around the County. When Wells Fargo, Tom's employer, became involved in Mama's Kitchen's annual Pie in the Sky fundraiser as the presenting sponsor, Tom was able to work closely with Mama's Kitchen and see firsthand the services being provided to hundreds of San Diegans in need. From there, Tom and his partner Andy began volunteering and eventually Tom joined the Board of Directors.

"After becoming more involved and seeing the work that was being done at Mama's, my partner Andy and I both gained more and more respect for Mama's Kitchen's mission. Mama's Kitchen is efficiently run, grassroots and volunteer driven, with its primary focus on serving its clients. We love that, and feel that this is the best "investment" we can make back into the community."

Tom chose to designate Mama's Kitchen as a beneficiary from his 401(k) plan primarily because it was so easy. "I requested an updated beneficiary form from our benefits department, filled it out, and it was done."

Did you know that the recipient of your bequeathed 401K plan may pay as much as 55% in combined federal and state income taxes? At this time there is no federal estate tax. If you donate to Mama's Kitchen, there are no tax penalties on your gift and Mama's Kitchen will put the fullness of your contribution towards feeding San Diegans with AIDS or cancer. Previously an IRA owner age 70 1/2 or over could directly transfer tax free up to $100,000 per year to an eligible charitable organization, regardless of whether or not they itemized their deductions. Unfortunately this option expired at the end of 2009.

Honoring Foundations

Broadway CaresBroadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS

Since 1988, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) has been one of the nation's leading industry-based nonprofit fundraising and grant-making AIDS organizations. Through the talents, resources and generosity of the American theatre community, BC/EFA raises millions of dollars annually to support organizations and essential services for people with AIDS and other critical illnesses across the United States.

In February, BC/EFA gave Mama's Kitchen a generous $25,000 grant for our Home-Delivered Meals Service, so that we could deliver nourishing meals to men, women and children affected by AIDS or cancer in San Diego. We are deeply grateful to BC/EFA for their generous and continuous support of our home-delivered meals program for people battling AIDS, and we appreciate their support of our expanded meal service for local residents battling cancer.

The Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation

Established in 1963, the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation has been a devoted supporter of programs that advance health and intellectual enlightenment. The Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation has sponsored a range of programs that improve Southern California communities, including community and youth programs, sciences and the arts.

The Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation have awarded Mama's Kitchen a $10,000 grant in support of our Children's Nutritional Health Program. This $10,000 will provide over 3,700 nutritious meals for San Diego children whose parents are too ill to cook or provide for their families. Thanks to the ongoing support from those like the Kenneth T. and Eileen L. Norris Foundation, Mama's Kitchen is able to continue to provide these disadvantaged kids the meals they need to stay healthy, active, and in school.

Corporate Support

qualcomm

As both a corporate and philanthropic leader, Qualcomm prides itself on being a good neighbor by investing in our local community. A long-time supporter of Mama's Kitchen, Qualcomm recently gave Mama's Kitchen a $30,000 grant in support of our Home-Delivered Meals Program. This allows us to provide the most basic necessity of life, nutritious food, for hundreds of underserved San Diegans struggling with AIDS or cancer.

In addition, Qualcomm's employees have actively engaged in our work by providing volunteer service at the kitchen and serving on our Board of Directors. Mama's Kitchen is proud to be a part of Qualcomm's vision for a safer and healthier San Diego!
