Our Mission

At Mama's Kitchen we believe that every person is entitled to the basic necessity of life, nutritious food. As a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization, we prepare and deliver food to men, women and children who are affected by AIDS or cancer.

Why Mama's Kitchen?

• Many people with AIDS suffer from HIV wasting syndrome, a severe form of emaciation. Due to extreme poverty, toxic medications and chronic nausea, AIDS and cancer patients have great difficulty eating balanced meals. This further damages their already weakened immune system's ability to fight infections, and the effects are unnecessary suffering, malnutrition and sometimes premature death.
• Mama's Kitchen is the only home-delivered meals program for people with AIDS or any type of cancer that provides three meals a day, seven days a week, serving clients across San Diego County - from Oceanside and Escondido in the north, to El Cajon and Spring Valley in the east, south to the border and throughout the city of San Diego.
• Mama's Kitchen provides 100% of the daily nutrition recommended by the American Dietetic Association for people with AIDS or cancer. In addition to our regular menu we offer 20 different meal plans for clients with dietary restrictions due to their religious beliefs, and for others whose symptoms or medications affect their ability to eat or tolerate certain foods.
• Over 95% of our clients live in poverty, most on a disability income, and without our help many would have to make the terrible choice between paying for housing or food.
• In 2009, Mama's Kitchen delivered 375,723 meals to a total of 1327 clients.
