Mama Has A New Home!
For the past 17 years, Mama's Kitchen has been leasing an operating space on Second Avenue in San Diego, in the basement of the Disciples Church. When we were informed that our lease would not be renewed, we needed to alter our vision and craft a new vision for the future.
Our board of directors did its due diligence in researching and exploring options for Mama's Kitchen. After the findings of a facilities ad hoc committee, a feasibility study, and a second assessment, they turned a crisis into an opportunity and voted on the purchase of a building at 3960 Home Avenue.
After a complete renovation, an open house and ribbon cutting ceremony was held on August 23 at the new 11,000 sq. ft. facility, with many of our dedicated volunteers, donors, public officials, and community supporters in attendance. Our new doors officially opened on August 29, without interruption of service to our clients. Mama's Kitchen is now better prepared to grow and serve the community than ever before.
Executive Director's Message
"Laura" has been dealing with cancer for many years and raising a child with his own health challenges. In her own words she tells us, "there have been many difficult years living with this illness and taking care of a special needs child alone." Laura also lives with arthritis in her hands, and is unable to cook for herself and her son. "Because of Mama's Kitchen, my son and I are able to have a good diet. Our lives have been improved because of this service."
