At Mama's Kitchen we believe that every person is entitled to the basic necessity of life, nutritious food. As a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization, we prepare and deliver food to men, women and children who are affected by AIDS or cancer.

Mama's Day 2012: A Foodie's Paradise

On May 11th, the San Diego restaurant community will come together once again to offer their distinctive dishes and celebrate 21 years of love at Mama's Day. Over 55 restaurants will be in attendance, in what promises to be the foodie event of the year. Held each year on the Friday before Mother's Day at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, Mama's Day is our largest fundraising event and a reminder for all of us that the fight against AIDS and cancer is still close to home.

Presented by Nordstrom and hosted by Sycuan Casino, Mama's Day 2012 is chaired by Heather Bowden. With her help and the work of dozens of volunteers, extraordinary chefs and generous sponsors, Mama's Day will be an evening to remember. Visit our website to see the list of exceptional restaurants that will be participating.

Our exclusive VIP Poolside Cabana Lounge is sponsored by Riviera Magazine and will include a special food and cocktail presentation by Culinary Host Sam “The Cooking Guy” Zien and Snake Oil Cocktail Mixologist Ian Ward. This year's event will feature a Super Silent Auction via text bidding, plus a fabulous Silent Auction, Opportunity Drawing and a 1-in-52 chance Wine Vault. Tickets are on sale now at www.mamaskitchen.org

Letter from the Executive Director

Alberto Cortes

Our new state-of-the-art kitchen provides increased capacity for in-house prepared meals. So, in March we started providing in-house prepared meals that will substitute pre-packaged frozen meals. Additionally, with the purchase and installation of a cooler and freezer, Mama's Pantry now also provides perishable items: namely, milk (whole and 2%), cheese, eggs, beef, chicken, and butter. Suffice to say that the sails of our new facility on Home Avenue are fully deployed and we are moving at a nice clip.

The number of home-delivered meals has been increasing steadily since the start of the year: over 15% increase compared to the same period in 2011. Mama's Kitchen is now serving three nutritious meals for each day to approximately 376 men, women, and children affected by AIDS or cancer every month. An additional 400 individuals visit Mama's Pantry monthly.

Mama's Kitchen marked one more milestone with the delivery of our 6 millionth meal on March 9th. This event, along with our day-to-day activities, affirm that Mama's Kitchen continues to make a difference. And we make it happen in an economically appropriate, nutritionally balanced, and client-caring manner.

One of the constants in our formula for success: our volunteers. The first voice you hear when you call Mama's Kitchen will likely be a volunteer. The first person you encounter when walking into Mama's will likely be a volunteer. The person delivering food – a volunteer. The person taking care of you at our fundraising event – a volunteer. A salute to the men and women that give of their time and talent in support of our mission. You make a difference.
