Happy Juneteenth from Mama’s Kitchen! 

On June 19th, 1865, Union-Major General Gordon Granger brought news of the Emancipation Proclamation to people who were enslaved in Texas.  

This news came two years after President Lincoln issued the Proclamation, but not every territory in the US had followed the president’s orders to free all enslaved people. On June 19th, 1865, formerly enslaved Black Americans celebrated their freedom. On June 17th, 2021, President Biden signed legislation establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Today, we celebrate and honor the movement for justice and freedom for Black Americans and renew our dedication to working towards equity in our organization and community.  

Celebrate Juneteenth by supporting local Black led organizations: 

  • BreakfastBloc_Mutual Aid Breakfast Block SD is a Black female founded community run mutual aid that collects and redistributes food, money, vital supplies and resources to our unsheltered community members in San Diego.  
  • Black Women Deserve Mutal Aid Fund This fund by March For Black Womxn San Diego. Funds provide emergency financial support to Black Womxn in crisis.  
  • SD Black Queer Housing is a mutual aid fund for Black queers in immediate need of safe housing.
