Every year, Mama’s Kitchen helps thousands of San Diegans who are vulnerable to hunger due to critical illness by providing medically tailored meals, nutrition counseling and pantry services – all at no cost. Last year, Mama’s Kitchen home delivered 523,038 medically tailored meals to individuals affected by cancer, HIV, type 2 diabetes, congestive heart failure, and chronic kidney disease.

For National Nonprofit Day, we wanted to share a few different ways to get involved with your local community through Mama’s Kitchen.

Volunteer

We are always looking for local volunteers who are passionate about making a difference in their community. There are a variety of areas you can support, check out the list below!

We continue to seek additional volunteers for:

  • Meal Delivery
  • Kitchen and Staging
  • Phone/Office Support

More information regarding our COVID-19 precautions and volunteer opportunities check out our Volunteer page here. If you have any questions or seek additional information, please contact Director of Volunteer Engagement, Mark Maddox at mark@mamaskitchen.org or 619.233.6262 x121.

Join Bread & Butter Club

One sustainable way to get involved is to join our monthly giving program! By giving monthly, you invest what makes sense for you and make an incredible impact over the course of your membership. Your gifts enable us to plan for our future, invest in specific areas of our work, expand our programs, and serve more of our neighbors because we know we have your ongoing support.

Host a Virtual Food Drive

At the beginning of the pandemic, Mama’s Kitchen made the decision to temporarily close Mama’s Pantry for the safety of our clients, and instead, allow them to enroll in our Home-Delivered Meal Service program. With increased demand comes increased costs to care for our community members. You can support our work and your community by simply sharing our impact with your friends, family and network through your own Virtual Food Drive. Customize your own easy-to-use fundraising page, set a goal, share updates and help us continue providing home-delivered meals to our critically ill neighbors.

Select Mama’s Kitchen as your favorite charity at smile.amazon.com and Amazon will donate 0.5% of eligible purchases at no extra cost. Follow the instruction here to set up your account and favorite charity.

Corporate Group Volunteering

Currently, we accept small volunteer groups in our kitchen on Monday and Thursday afternoons from 4pm to 6pm. Volunteers help package snack items for our Home-Delivered Meal Service. If you are interested in scheduling a group volunteer opportunity, please contact Maggie Lengyel at maggie@mamaskitchen.org.

Supporting your community and Mama’s Kitchen can be done in so many ways. Have additional questions about how you or your company can get involved? Reach out to us at mamas@mamaskitchen.org; we would love to help you get involved.
